Daylight, Duncan Sheik’s fourth studio album, was released by Atlantic Records on August 27, 2002. Produced by Patrick Leonard, the record returned Sheik to a more overtly pop-oriented sound after the comparatively subdued Phantom Moon, while retaining the elaborate arrangements and orchestral elements of that album. AllMusic’s Hal Horowitz described Daylight as an ambitious singer-songwriter record built around “winding song structures, romanticized lyrics, and lush orchestrations,” with “On a High” serving as its first single. Rolling Stone characterized the album as a collection of pleasant, restrained pop songs.
The packaging is dominated by Leviathan from Hoefler & Co., used for the tightly packed front cover titling. Gotham appears elsewhere in the package for supporting sans-serif typography. Portions of the credits and secondary text use Melior.
