In a city with a long history of vibrant design and visual noise, Zohran Mamdani’s campaign graphics, designed by Forge, felt right at home.

Inspired by bodega awnings and New York street typography, designer Aneesh Bhoopathy created a hand-lettered wordmark based on Boheld, with texts rendered in multiple weights and widths of Union Gothic and the script typeface Coffee Service.

The work has been applauded for looking “nothing like a campaign logo” and “unmistakably New York.” It has been credited with forging a new pathway in a long tradition of bland political campaign graphics.

From the brand guidelines document: “The campaign’s identity reflects the vibrant primary colors that help bodega signage and cab livery stand out in busy New York streets.”
