A superbly assembled and printed large format brochure that was issued to record the Underground services achievements during the period of the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth that took place on 12 May 1937. It includes a description of the event and the organisation that saw over 5,669,000 passengers carried during 46 hours of continuous Underground service; Charing Cross (now Embankment) station saw 6,530 train movements during that period. The numbers of passengers carried was probably inflated by the fact that London’s bus workers stayed out on strike for the period including the coronation that saw the Tube, the trams and trolleybuses taking the strain.
The brochure, bearing many hallmarks of the influence of Christian Barman, the Board’s Publicity Officer, was printed at the Curwen Press, Plaistow, and is beautifully produced.
