Uroki Las-Vegasa. Zabytyy simvolizm arkhitekturnoy formy

Уроки Лас-Вегаса. Забытый символизм архитектурной формы is a Russian edition of Learning From Las Vegas: The Forgotten Symbolism of Architectural Form by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour, first published in 1972 and revised in 1977. It was my final project at ABCDesign, developed in response to a brief from Ad Marginem. The task was to design something that, using only the tools available to me, would capture the book’s central theme: “too much”, yet still refined, minimalist, and readable.

I wanted the typography to have multiple voices, reflecting the book’s many layers of text, including at least four types of footnotes. To keep the layout clean, I chose a single, universal typeface, Times New Roman, one of the most familiar (and perhaps overused) computer fonts. All headings and captions were set fully justified, creating rhythmic gaps — “too much” for book design, but still easy to read in short bursts.

To bring the spreads together, since images flowed through the text, creating areas of density and emptiness, I introduced full-bleed black panels along the edges and spine. The result is structured, yet carries a subtle punk attitude. Exactly as I intended.

The book was published by Ad Marginem in 2023.
