The Die neue Polis book series were designed by unfolded for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung publishing house: NZZ Libro. The series explores constitutional, political, economic and contemporary historical issues in Switzerland. Edited by Astrid Epiney, Dieter Freiburghaus, Kurt Imhof and Georg Kreis, Die neue Polis brings together authors from a range of disciplines to examine current debates, challenge established positions and place controversial issues in a broader social and political context.

The design is based on a deliberately restrained typographic approach, balancing the publisher’s traditional sensibility with a contemporary visual language. With no images or illustrations, typography carries the entire visual identity of the series. The covers feature a distinctive treatment of the blurb: set in bold italic, it appears directly on the front cover rather than on the inside flap. This unconventional decision creates a subtle visual tension, almost as if the front cover had been torn away, revealing the text beneath.

The result is a coherent series in which typography, format and material presence take centre stage. The first two volumes, Die demokratische Verfassung and Erprobt und entwicklungsfähig, were selected for The Most Beautiful Swiss Books, recognising the design of a non-fiction series for its clarity, restraint and distinctive approach to the book as a physical object.
