Crumbling Land is a project studying climate migration’s impact on property and sovereignty in North America. Noah Gotlib is using BM Survey drawn by Biliktü Foundry for the project. Noah asked for a typeface that looked like government forms, close to Helvetica, and used the typesetting in Fred Scharmen’s Space Settlements as a reference. Some ascenders and arcs are split. The splits and tiny corner cut details are inspired by the Jefferson Township survey grid, which is visible in aerial photos of the towns in the project.

BM Survey is a variable font with weights from 400 to 900. The letters widen and the spacing tightens as it gets heavier. It’s mostly used at small sizes for maps and footnotes, and it’s also used for the film subtitles.
