Alphabet Forestier takes root on the cover of Contes Nocturnes (English: Night Pieces; original German: Nachtstücke), a collection of short stories written by the German author E.T.A. Hoffmann, one of the pioneers of Dark Romanticism.

Spotted in Alphabet-album; collection de soixante feuilles d'alphabets historiés et fleuronnés, tirés des principales bibliothèques de l’Europe (“Alphabet Album; a collection of sixty sheets of illustrated and ornate alphabets, drawn from the major libraries of Europe”), these decorative letters transform the title into an eerie woodland, drawing the reader into the gothic and fantastical world within.
