Today is general election day in the U.S. and people are sharing the “I Voted” stickers that most local districts give away at the polls and in mailed ballot packets. I appreciate that Hollis Callas, the creator of this sticker for the San Francisco elections, chose something by a local type designer. My best guess is that Callas started with Modesto Initials Fill and perhaps redrew from there. While this style was originally intended to give a color inline to the letters (see below), it’s still effective here.
It’s also a lovely tribute to Jim Parkinson, who lived most of his life across the bay in Oakland and recently passed away. Parkinson named many of his typefaces after cities near his home, and this is one example (Modesto is a midsize town about 80 miles from Oakland). Maybe Callas didn't know that her choice came from a local legend, and simply scrolled to the font in an Adobe app, but I choose to believe otherwise.
