Dog Below by Nick Greer is a novel about survival, belief, legacy, illness, fate, and how language mediates it all. The story of a father and son’s isolation and its inevitable rupture is narrated through a feral idiolect in the tradition of other apocalyptic novels like Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker, Denis Johnson’s Fiskadoro, Brian Evenson’s Dark Property, and Paul Kingsnorth’s The Wake.
The father’s worldview is a heady brew of doomerism, orientalism, and conspiracy, which is reflected in the art, which draws inspiration from conspiracy maps, intelligence memos, cult iconography, Alexander Heir’s work as Death/Traitors, and the metaphysical diagrams of Paul Laffoley.
The cover fonts, Alpenkreuzer and Microgramma D Bold, were chosen for their force and assertiveness, though this is compromised by the redactions of the synopsis. Alpenkreuzer was also chosen for its association with rugged terrain. The script of the conspiratorial endpapers is a modified version of STH Doughter, a font originally inspired by drawing out words in flour with one’s finger, but here resembles how the father of the book teaches his son to read: with a stick in the dirt or snow.
