Between 1972 and 1975, The Gay Alternative operated as a non-profit gay magazine documenting the voices and culture of its community. Now archived at the William Way LGBT Community Center, Philadelphia’s most extensive collection of periodicals, audiovisual material and ephemera documenting the history of the LGBTIQ+ community, the publication is described as follows:
The Gay Alternative, published by members of Philadelphia’s Gay Activist Alliance, was a literary forum for gay expression created by a collective of individuals during the early years of gay liberation. It included poetry, fiction, articles, book reviews, local news, plays and photos as well as photos and ads for local businesses.
The fifth issue features a hand-drawn logo based on Celtic / Forum Flair / University Roman, alongside a list of article titles set in Albertus, ITC Serif Gothic, University Roman, Frankfurter, Cooper Black and Futura.
