Feral, primal, untamed: since 2000, French photographer Charles Fréger has documented masked traditions across Europe through his ongoing project “Wilder Mann”. His striking portraits capture figures that exist somewhere between menace, fascination, and strength.

For Charivari at Zeughaus Teufen, Fréger spent two winters travelling across Switzerland, photographing carnivals and seasonal rituals where laughter, mockery, and exuberance are used to chase away evil spirits and winter. Alongside these new works, the exhibition presents masks and ritual figures from across Europe, exploring laughter as a force that connects, transforms, and reveals something deeply human.
