All Time Country and Western Hits Vol. 2 was first released in 1961 by Decca, with a different cover. Shown here is the German sleeve for the compilation album, issued by Coral Records as COPS 1789 about a decade later.
According to David Shields’ research, the title typeface was first shown as wood type by J.G. Cooley in the c.1859 Specimens of Wood Type. Vanderburgh Wells & Company named it Gothic Dotted by 1872. The version used here probably is Utica, a phototype adaptation carried by Typeshop, the German chain of typesetting studios. There are several digital interpretations of the knobby face, including ITC Florinda (Luis Siquot, 1997) and, more faithfully, Gothic Tuscan 8 (Wooden Type Fonts, 2008).
