For the Year of Puppet Theatre (in Czech: Rok loutkového divadla), the Czech Puppet Centre commissioned Magdaléna Lindaurová and Michal Chodanič of the Prague-based graphic design studio Kapitola to develop a visual identity.
The Year of Puppet Theatre marks two major milestones in Central European puppetry: twenty years since Czech and Slovak puppetry were added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and 100 years since the founding of UNIMA (the international puppetry organisation) in Prague.
The visual identity uses Hofmann and Lucifer by Nguyen Gobber as its main building blocks. Hofmann’s organic, amorphous curves reflect the idea that puppets today can take on endlessly diverse forms, from traditional carved figures to contemporary experimental objects.
The identity is introduced through a printed brochure and includes a travelling award for the best puppet performance, which is typographically derived from Hofmann.
