Rare Earth – Band Together album art

Started in Detroit in 1960 under the name The Sunliners, Rare Earth was the first successful act signed by Motown that consisted of white members only. Their 1978 album was released on Prodigal. Acquired by Motown in 1976, Prodigal served as Motown’s sublabel for rock music, succeeding their previous Rare Earth Records (which had been named after the band). Art direction and design by Wriston Jones, with photography by Alan Bergman.
The front cover features two weights from ITC Lubalin Graph, the geometric slab designed by Herb Lubalin and drawn by Tony Di Spigna and Joe Sundwall, issued by ITC in 1974. The titles and credits on the back cover are set in Memphis, one of Lubalin Graph’s precursors, designed by Rudolf Wolf and first cast in 1929.
