O Universo de J. Cunha, published by Editora Corrupio in 2016, is the first monograph dedicated to the work of Brazilian visual artist, graphic designer, and scenographer José Antônio Cunha — known simply as J. Cunha. Born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1948, with roots in Afro-Brazilian, indigenous Kariri, and Romani cultures, Cunha spent five decades building one of the most distinctive bodies of work in contemporary Brazilian art. The book’s typography is set in Cantiga, a typeface published by Isaco Type.

Curated by artist and researcher Danillo Barata, the publication is organized into six thematic sections — Barroco Safado, Mutum, Homem Pássaro, Sertão e Luz, Carnavália, and Áfricas e Códice — covering the full width of Cunha’s output: paintings, prints, fabric patterns, poster design, album covers, costumes, and stage sets. Among his most recognized works is the visual identity of Ilê Aiyê, one of Brazil’s most important Afro-carnival blocks, founded in Salvador in 1974.
