Harrisburg tailor Edgar J. Huggins (1872–1967) intended this card to look like a valuable Pennsylvania Railroad pass.
The catch? Although the card claims the free pass is valid on all railroads, the bearer must walk, carry their own baggage, swim all rivers, and – of course – stop to see Huggins, the Tailor at 207 Locust Street.
See the rotated and cropped version below for a better view of the train on the “Return Ticket.”
Huggins also published a version of this pass as a 1906 newspaper ad with an illustration of a canal boat instead of a train.
Pennsylvania R.R. Free Pass.
This pass is good on all railroads provided the bearer walks, carries his own baggage, swims all rivers, and stops at
Huggins, the Tailor, 207 Locust St., Harrisburg, Pa.
Return Ticket.
The blackletter used for headlines is Cloister Black (1904). It’s paired with Mazarin, Barnhart Brothers & Spindler’s 1895 follower of Morris Golden, for the sender’s address. The text typeface is some unidentified oldstyle roman, cf. Old Style No. 7.
