Milano in mostra. Spazi e luoghi dell’esporre / Milan on Display: Exhibition Spaces and Venues is the sixth volume in the Itinerari di Architettura series, designed by Studio Folder and curated by the Foundation of the Order of Architects of Milan.

The publication explores the evolving landscape of exhibition spaces in Milan, from museums and foundations to public and private galleries, offering a comprehensive overview of the city’s display culture. The book serves as a guide to the multiplicity of exhibition formats that, particularly over the past two decades, have contributed to positioning Milan as a key destination for audiences interested in art and architecture. It highlights how both public and private initiatives have shaped a dynamic and continuously transforming cultural environment.

Accompanying the volume, a map edited by Manuele Salvetti identifies a selection of significant venues, outlining a vibrant network of exhibition spaces across the city. This map offers a thoughtful guide to Milan’s exhibition venues, presenting a selection of places that have helped shape the city’s cultural identity over time. It is not an exhaustive map, but rather a selection that focuses on established venues within the urban fabric, where staging exhibitions and displaying art are fundamental aspects of their activities and cultural mission.

The division into four categories – museums and public institutions, museums and private institutions, galleries, Fuorisalone – reflects the complexity of a system that has succeeded in bringing together institutional tradition and contemporary experimentation. Each space bears witness to different characteristics of exhibiting; a comparative reading helps to draw a cultural map that goes beyond the boundaries of the historic center to define a widespread network of experiences distributed throughout the territory.
