To mark the 20th anniversary of the ALPS Landscape Workshop, publishing house Latvijas Mediji released the book Iekustināt ainavu telpu / Awakening the Landscape. Published in both Latvian and English, the book explores the multifaceted nature of landscape and reflects on the evolving role of landscape architects. It offers insight into the values of the ALPS team and reveals the creative processes behind their projects.
This publication serves as both a guide and a source of inspiration—not only for garden and plant enthusiasts, but also for urban planners and city administrators.
I created the book’s visual identity seeking to capture the “living energy of nature.” The design features fresh, expressive colors—a pastel blue cover and yellow-green accents on page edges and chapter openings—enhanced by organic, hand-drawn forms. Like a meadow, where everything is constantly changing, the composition is intuitively arranged, allowing the eye to move freely.
I drew inspiration from the collage technique of Henri Matisse, noting how the artist transformed physical limitations into a new, joyful creative language. This idea of creativity as a force that overcomes constraints resonates with the themes explored in the book’s essays.
The book is printed and bound by Jelgavas tipogrāfija.
