It’s that time of the year again: summer means graduation time!
The Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar (University of Arts and Design Saar, HBKsaar) is happy to showcase its graduating students and their projects from the BA, MA, and Diplom programs.
This year’s visual identity is about time, quite literally: it’s about time that these students finally graduate. It’s about the right time to take the next step. And, after another year of studying, working, deadlines, and critiques, it’s definitely about time for a proper celebration again – at the beloved Sommerfest, right after the graduation ceremony! (take this, Rundgang!)
At the center of the identity is a huge sun. The end of a period of study marks the start of something new, but there is no single direction in which to go from here. Every graduate has to find their own way. Starting a business, applying for jobs, or taking a break – sunrise or sunset. Or bright sunshine at high noon, depending on how you look at it! Everybody gets to choose what comes next.
Posters in different formats, together with a billboard and program leaflet, advertise the exhibitions and help visitors find their way through the various locations and events.
The posters (DIN A2 and 70×100 cm) were printed in full-color offset with a Pantone silver gradient on glossy paper and finished with a glossy varnish, adding to the celebratory feel. The billboard and program leaflets are printed in regular full color and skip the metallic inks due to production restrictions.
The only typeface in use is Magister ST by Source Type. The typographic composition is divided into three sections: a header carrying basic information; a centerpiece with the headline, areas of study, and, most importantly, the exhibition dates; and a footer with an additional headline and Roman numerals.
In the background, all 93 HBKsaar graduates of 2026 are represented in a connect-the-dots composition. Once connected, they form an icon depicting a group of people – bringing the “class of 2026” together beyond their graduation show.
At the time of writing, it was about time. Now, keep your eyes on the HBKsaar graduates and see where they go next.
