Hanjin – Vexations

Everyday Practice designed graphics for a solo exhibition by Hanjin (한진) in One and J. Gallery, named Vexations (벡사시옹). “Vexations” means bullying, and is a title borrowed from Eric Satie’s piano performance of the same name. This one-page score must be played 840 times in succession, very slowly; it takes twenty hours to complete the performance.

Eric Satie's instructions, “Point out a very slow note, think about what kind of echo the note has, and quietly focus and prepare for the next note,” remind us of the artist's attitude toward painting. Because for the artist, painting is to look at the scenery in her memory for a long time and draw it repeatedly, and to prepare for what will come next by accepting the friction of the material very slowly.

Everyday Practice tried to fully incorporate her attitude toward the work she had in preparing for an exhibition titled “Vexations” into the design. Graphics of slow-moving nature's time, inverted typography, and prints that combine the front and rear divisions resemble the image of the landscape created by the artist crossing the space of time and physical space and the artist's attitude toward it.
