A bookplate inserted a book of Walter Scott’s poetry in 1923, indicating it was a prize given by the Bickerton House School. The bookplate itself isn’t dated and may be an earlier design.
Bickerton House School was founded in 1860 by Mr William Mathwin as a Wesleyan Methodist boarding school for boys. It was named after Admiral Sir Richard Hussy Bickerton and had grounds covering four acres on York Road in Birkdale. It closed on the 19th July 1963.
The word “prize” is in Arboret No. 2 and includes some additional ornamentation from the font on either side of the word. The border elements are taken from the font as well, see this specimen from 1885.
