The film festival AFRIKAMERA is a German festival running from 2024 to 2027 under the themes BELIEVE – CHANGE – REFLECT – CREATE. Its aim is to showcase diverse, inspiring, and sometimes even conflicting perspectives that open up new ways of thinking.

The typography pairs three typefaces: Futura is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Paul Renner in 1924–1926. Its clean and precise forms give the festival design a sense of modernity and clarity. Saira is a versatile sans-serif type system by Héctor Gatti of Omnibus-Type, offering a wide range of weights and widths that add flexibility and variation. This year’s theme, “Change”, is shown in all-caps Benzin, a wide grotesk designed by Roman Postovoy for Supremat.

Together with the color palette of the festival images, typography becomes the key design component of the website. This combination doesn’t just support readability—it also creates a strong atmosphere and visual identity that reflects the festival’s character.

The website, designed by Frank Paul of ants and butterflies communicates the festival’s identity very effectively: clear layouts make it easy for visitors to navigate the program and reflect the festival’s variety without overwhelming the user. Colors and contrasts, combined with the strong typography, create a visual connection to the vibrancy of African culture while keeping the overall look contemporary and accessible. Futura provides consistency and legibility, while Saira adds nuance and flexibility across different sections. In combination with the imagery, this creates a striking and memorable hierarchy. Responsive design ensures that the website works smoothly across devices, which is crucial for an international audience.

The AFRIKAMERA website manages to translate the festival’s themes into a coherent and engaging design language. By making typography and color the central design elements, it achieves a clear identity that feels both professional and dynamic. What I find most successful is the balance: the design is straightforward enough to serve the content but expressive enough to mirror the festival’s spirit of change and cultural dialogue.
