Fan deck brochure for the BA and MA students of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, designed with the open license, variable typeface Tiny by Jack Halten Fahnestock and available from Velvetyne.

By superimposing the typeface's small and big styles (Tiny 20 and 220) and blending them, it creates these bubbley, cloudy textured shapes. When applying that to Tiny’s extended glyph set, it creates a nice series of simple illustrations, reminiscing of pareidolia. The illustrations on the front side of the fan deck go from a black outside to a white inside, and vice versa on on the backside.

For a nice, legible body text in this slim brochure, I chose the Narrow Regular style of Agrandir, designed by Alex Slobzheninov and available from Pangram Pangram.

To separate the two parts of the brochure, I chose a fan deck as a playful, printed object. Something that’s nice to take home, albeit slightly unconventional, but not to the students of the Rietveld. One side covers all that’s needed to know about the workings of the academy and campus, from opening times and holidays to printing problems, and when flipped, the brochure helps you manoeuvre the new environments and cultures you find in Amsterdam and its surroundings.

The screw-bound brochure, measuring 180×90mm, was grayscale-printed by Joon in Tallinn on 300g Serixco offset paper in an edition of 1000 copies.
