Nightmare Blue is a science fiction novel written by Gardner Dozois (1947–2018) together with George Alec Effinger (1947–2002). It was first published in 1975 as a Berkley Medaillon book, with cover art by Paul Lehr (1930–1998). The uncredited typographer used Vantage for the title, with a foreboding blue shadow.
Vantage is a boxy sans characterized by triangular notches in counters and shoulders. In this aspect, it’s similar to Checkmate (1968), a semi-slab of wider proportions. Its creator is unknown. The mix of round and angular terminals – compare M and N – suggest it wasn’t an experienced type designer. Vantage was advertised by Lettergraphics in 1974. A 1976 catalog shows it in three weights plus various Outline and Shadow styles. By 1978, Castcraft had copied it under the name Volpe. I’m not aware of a digitization.
