Hester Street is based on Abraham Cahan’s 1896 novella Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto, adapted and directed by Joan Micklin Silver in 1975. Much of the dialogue is delivered in Yiddish with English subtitles. Shot in black-and-white, the film tells the story of Jewish immigrants who come to the Lower East Side of New York City in 1896 from Eastern Europe.

As part of a series for NonStop Entertainment, Malmsten Hellberg designed the poster for the Swedish premier of a 4K-restored version of the film. The English title is set in ITC Souvenir by Ephram Edward Benguiat, the type designer who was born 1927 in Brooklyn; and the Yiddish title is set in Noto Serif Hebrew; with Ivar Text used for the billing block.
