Over the years, Davida’s hallmark terminals have served to conjure up all kinds of associations: from the long curls of hippie counterculture and festive baubles of the Christmas season, to clouds of exhaust fumes representing the Steam Age, etc. pp.

On this book cover for Bantam’s paperback edition of The Halloween Tree, they seem to echo the branches and twigs decorated with jack-o’-lanterns – grabbing for trick-or-treaters?
