Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (stylized as III) is a first-person shooter developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision, released on November 10th of 2023. It is the third entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare series and the 20th in the franchise. The campaign follows Task Force 141 as they persue Russian terrorist Vladimir Makarov as he plans to trigger a third World War.
In 2023, Activision initiated a large rebrand of the Call of Duty franchise, bringing all of its current and future games under one streamlined identity. Massive enough to include its own branding website, this includes your usual suspects such as a new logo, guidelines, branding material and the like. Most relevant here is the series’ new typeface, Hitmarker, an unapologetically chunky font “rooted in classic military vernacular” designed by NaN.
The face of this rebrand is Modern Warfare III, which uses Hitmarker like its life depended on it. I can't really blame it honestly, especially after spending what I assume is a ton of money and man-power for a franchise-wide rebrand and a massive custom typeface.
Much of the game’s UI uses Hitmarker Text Regular for small to medium sized copy. The rest of the HUD, headline and display type wastes no time using the breadth of options that Hitmarker has available. From the normal width and relatively normal weight to the extra bold and very extended widths, which for some reason the UI designers really liked using the latter style. Blender and Futura return from previous entries and are similarly used inconspicuously. Noto Sans also returns for localization purposes.
