Neil Bold for print ads by Datsun from 1971, some 18 years before the Simpsons launched (and a full two decades before Homer Simpson devised “The Homer”, also known as “The Car Built for Homer”):

He’s our model American. We call him Homer. Millions of U.S. drivers are built pretty much like him. So we put him together with care and purpose. Took his measure in every position. We wanted to make sure all our cars could handle Homer with the greatest of ease.
