The book cover for Our Share of the Night by Mariana Enriquez, with cover design and art by Donna Cheng. The all-caps, bold treatment of TT Ricks works perfectly with the illustration, the yellow nails mirroring the sharpness of the letter R’s. The one-sided serifs on the uppercase N, M, and U are also a nice detail.
Donna Cheng discusses the illustration and typography in the Oprah Daily cover reveal article in August 2022:
We wanted a central image that was bold and haunting, both alluring and evocative of the novel’s dark themes. The hand is immediately captivating, and the flames dissolving into the abyss allude to a pivotal moment in the book. It all came together with a gothic font that complements the sharp claws, against a background of a fading dusk-blue sky.
For supporting typography, the author line and blurb attribution are set in Generica Condensed Bold, while the blurb itself is set in ITC Franklin Gothic Condensed. The elegant script used for “A Novel” and “Translated by” is Elicit Script.
