Georg Baselitz. Hotel garni 게오르그 바젤리츠《가르니 호텔》is the catalog accompanying Georg Baselitz’s exhibition of the same title at Thaddeus Ropac Seoul. It has a simple, minimal design with titles in English (using the Latin alphabet) and Korean (using Hangeul). The font used for the Korean appears to be Sandoll GothicNeo1 Medium. The font used for English text is yet unidentified – it’s similar to Helvetica and also Sangam MN Latin, but not a perfect match.

The book includes drawings and paintings made by the artist in preparation for his new canvases. At the exhibition Baselitz presented a recognizable series of paintings in which his touch can be felt, and which he devoted himself to the motif of his wife Elke.

From the gallery:

Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul opens with an exhibition of twelve paintings and twelve drawings by Georg Baselitz, which were created specifically with the opening of the new gallery space in mind. The artist’s historic connection with the city dates back to his first institutional solo exhibition in Korea at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2007. One of the most important artists of our time, Baselitz shaped a new identity for German art in the second half of the 20th century and has had a profound influence on international art since 1960. The exhibition will coincide with the opening of the artist’s largest retrospective to date, at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

The catalog was edited by Patricia Schmidlechner, Kyu Jin Hwang, and Arne Ehmann and includes a text by Kim Namin.
