Alphabet Lapidaire Monstre was originally shown by Jean Midolle around 1835. A simplified version – ALM Text, if you will – was used on a 1971 poster for Fando and Lis.

Fando y Lis is the feature length directorial debut of Chilean-French film maker Alejandro Jodorowsky. It’s based on a 1958 play by Fernando Arrabal. Produced in 1968 in Mexico, the surrealist film premiered at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival. The use of ALM here likely is a nod to Marcel Duchamp’s appropriation of Midolle’s typeface for La Septième face du dé from 1936.
