Young, Gifted and Black is the eighteenth studio album by American soul singer Aretha Franklin, released by Atlantic Records in early 1972. It reached #2 on Billboard’s R&B albums survey and peaked at #11 on the Pop charts. It contains the much-sampled cut “Rock Steady”, with drums by Bernard “Pretty” Purdie.
Cover designer Stanisław Zagórski made clever use of ITC Avant Garde Gothic’s alternate A’s for the singer’s first name, and inserted an RA ligature in her family name.
